Why isn't FUZEON^® offered as a pill?

The active ingredient contained in FUZEON, enfuvirtide, is a protein. Proteins are ineffective when taken orally because they are destroyed by the high acidity of the stomach. FUZEON has to be injected because if taken by mouth, it would be digested in your stomach and would not work.
